The WHL will be covered by Starball

By Delorean Fleetwood

Portland, OR, United States and Penticton, Britsh Columbia, Canada: Starball Sports and Entertainment will complete their CHL umbrella of coverage by covering the Western Hockey League in the near future. Start time for coverage is still TBD.

“I grew up in arguably the best place for hockey in not just the United States, but possibly the world.” CEO Delorean Fleetwood said Thursday morning. “The city of Portland is the only one in the game of hockey that can lay claim to being on the Lester Patrick Cup, the Ed Chynoweth Cup, the Memorial Cup, and last but not least, the Stanley Cup. Not even Seattle, Montreal, or God forbid Detroit can brag about that.” He added with a smile. “The Western Hockey League top to bottom is arguably the best of the three CHL leagues. Players such as Scott Neidermeyer, Cam Neely, and Connor Bedard have come from the deepest league in Junior Hockey.” In recent years, former British Columbia Hockey League teams in the Wenatchee Wild and Penticton Vees have joined the WHL, making the league a hot spot for growing and up and coming talent in the Cascadia region. The league will be giving Chilliwack another shot starting next year. The old Chiefs, like the Vees, are a hotbed in the BCHL circles, and I can’t wait to see a return for the City of Chilliwack in the Western Hockey League’s future.”

The Chilliwack Bruins played five seasons before relocating to Victoria. The WHL will expand back to Chilliwack for 2026-27.

The Chilliwack Bruins played in the WHL from 2006-07 to 2010-11. The team was sold after the 2010-11 season and is now known as the Victoria Royals.

The WHL has 24 teams across four Canadian Provinces and two US States. Chilliwack is in British Columbia.

The Western Hockey League has 24 teams, the most out of the three CHL leagues, with six teams in the Pacific Northwest United States. Five in Washington (Seattle, Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Wenatchee) and one in Portland, Oregon. The leagues footprint is also the biggest of the three leagues stretching from the Pacific Northwest US to Vancouver Island and British Columbia, Alberta,  Saskatchewan, and as far east as Brandon, Manitoba.
